About Tomos engines
In the beginning they manufactured engines in temporary facilities, and that's when a licensing agreement was signed with Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The factory in Koper, where the company seat was also located, officially opened only in 1959. Did you know that the name Tomos developed from the words Tovarna MOtorjev Sežana (Motors Factory Sežana). The name became highly recognizable as they began manufacturing Tomos engines also in Epe in the Netherlands. There they also developed Colibri, Targa and Revival.
The heyday of Tomos engines
The first Tomos engine was produced in 1955 named Puch SG250, that year they manufactured 137 of them. Later came the Colibri in several versions. The first Automatic was called T, which by today's standards is already an antique. In 1973 the Cross 50 was made, later came the Apn4, which became a real hit. The legendary moped was manufactured from 1970 to 1984, in appearance it resembled its predecessor the Puch MS 50. The name APN 4 comes from the four gears it had. The maximum speed of the moped was 48 km/h. This particular engine is known for extensive modifications of lights, fenders, handlebars... The successor to APN4 was Apn 6 which was manufactured for six years from 1981. The maximum speed originally reached 49 km/h and it had 4 foot gears.
Subsequently it also came in the APN 6S version, which differed somewhat in appearance and cooling system. APN7 is visually very similar to APN4, the difference being that APN7 is newer and has an improved cooling system. Over time they also developed Sprint and several different Tomos Colibri, A3, A5 Automatic, Electronic, Trickle, PTT, Cross, Youngster, Sprinter, Alpine... Later the engine family was joined by Flexer, which has a two-stage automatic transmission. The last engine manufactured in the previous century was Tomos Classic made in 1999, later came modern Tomos engines.
Tomos engines are the pride of the Koper company and easily bring back memories from the 80s of the last century. With economic growth, many young people could afford to buy a moped, which now brings a retro effect. By selling parts for Tomos engines we want to keep the engines running, as reliving old times is truly a unique charm.
